6.30pm, Friday 13th May. A rental car full of snacks, people, and music. Joy.

I was in the drivers seat to take us to Swansea, or rather, Pennard which is near Swansea. Google said 3.5hours, so we planned for 4, with London Friday night traffic. Sam was on the motorbike and we were meeting some other friendos at the house, and we had a walk planned for the next day.

The walk we had chosen was Three Cliffs Bay, about a four hour round trip. The weather forecast was kind of grey and cold, which turned out to be completely wrong, as it was sunny and warm the whole time we were there. We'd booked into an air bnb that was walking distance from the trail, which was handy the next day.

We shipped off to the supermarket in the morning to grab some picnic lunch and set off about 12. I was never terribly great at orienteering but a combo of the map from the 'country walks' book + iPhone maps, it's kind of hard to go off course. We joined the track a wee way from the beginning, walking through a golf course and on to the ruins of Pennard Castle. Down some sand dunes, along the beach for a bit, crossing the estuary on some stepping stones which was cool.  We followed the coastal path up the cliffs for an amazing outlook back towards the castle, then right along the top of the cliffs to some sand dunes down towards the beach. There was a family playing on a tyre swing halfway down, and a sign saying look out for adders. Ah yes, the wilderness.

Down through some beach forest and through some reedy/brush wetland area and on to the beach for lunch. It was great perving on all the dogs on the beach, all of which completely ignored us. Sigh. We spotted a pub at the end of the beach, which added an hour of walking to the day. It was nice to have a chilly glass of wine, in the sun, beside the beach. Almost like being at home...

A windy and beachy walk back, straight up some sand dunes, a quick geocache (thanks Greer for complaining about not finding any treasure, which led us to check the app and indeed, find some treasure)

Sam found us a waterfall to visit the next day that was only a short drive away, which also turned out to be the same waterfall from the movie The Dark Knight Rises. It is in Brecon Beacons, a national park about an hour out of Swansea. Henrhyd Falls it's called. There is a bigger walk you can take around there, which we didn't have time for, but the walk to the waterfall is a rapid downhill 10-15 mins. Pretty rad, it wasn't gushing as much as it can, and there really isn't a full on cave back there, but you can walk behind it which is super cool. It looks slipperier than it is, and you get drizzled on more than you'd expect. 1000 chocolate bars and 19 bags of skittles later, it was home time. Country time is the best time, in my opinion.
