Bourgers

accidentally in Germany

one of my fav photos ive ever taken, randomly

Fun fact, someone from Luxembourg is called a Luxembourger, or within the country, Bourgers. Something I never knew I would be excited to know. I wish I was a Bourger. Anywho, for the second May bank holiday some gals and I had booked a trip to Luxembourg. It was super cheap, something like £49 return I think. Well, cheap for a long weekend anyway.

We left at Friday about lunchtime, and after a super quick turnaround at Luxembourg airport (it's very small and straightforward) we were on the bus (€2) to the city centre. The airbnb we had booked was a 15 min walk from where we hopped off, and was super easy to find, on a little square called Edouard Andre, which has a cute lil fountain in its middle. The lady who's house we were borrowing was just leaving (she was an actual pixie I swear) and gave us some recommendations for places to eat etc. Well, go us trying to find them later on. It was supposed to rain, so we decided to look for one of the three places she said were yum, close, and having a courtyard. Well. Fail we did. Up and down and all around looking, none of the places were turning up, then the one we did want to go to (relatively empty) couldn't seat us as we hadn't booked, boo. We dropped into the supermarket since we managed to make it juuuust before it closed, then it started bucketing down. Hail, rain, I was waiting for flash flooding or something, it was so sudden and heavy. Lucky there was an undercover walkway very handy, so we ducked in there and found some classic little Italian place. Classic, cheap looking, but the pizzas we had were aaaaamazing. The man running it picked us some wine, which was also super nice, and they brought out some starter stuff, on the house, which is always a winner. I couldn't tell you what it was called for the life of me though...

The next day we walked down into the town centre, through the Pétrusse Parks which was really pretty. Its all very steep but lush and green, and as we were coming down the wee creek st the bottom we stumbled upon some kind of light festival being set up. Sadly it was still day time so no luck seeing them all aglow. Through some old ruiney walls and walkways, up a steep steep hill and accidentally through some old peoples home or hospital  haha. Here we joined the 'Wenzel Path' and went down through some old fortress steps to the Neumünster Abbey, where we stopped for a NICE COLD PINT cos boy was it heating up. Muggy and the sun was just starting to come out a bit, after a rather grey and drizzly morning. There is a nice view of the cliff side from the courtyard, where you can see the openings of the Casemates. We decided to leave the Casemates for the following day and  head home via the supermarket.

We went for breakfast at a nice little place in town, and figured our french isn't quite as bad as I'd have thought - between us we could pretty much decipher the menu, or, well, the bulk of the brunch items anyway. It started to rain halfway through so they kindly moved us inside to 'the big table', and as you can imagine it was us four with a bunch of locals, kinda a cool way to eat ya breakfast. The man who was serving us was looking at me like wtf/haha cos every time he came past I was finishing someone else's food...why not aye.

Then down to the Casemates for some tunnely exploring, it was nice and chilly down there. Hot tip, when the sign on the wall says dead end or round trip, and you are going down one way staircase into the cliff, there really will not be an exit down there haha...

Next we jumped in a rental car and headed out of town with the general direction of Vianden. The rental agreement only included 150 miles, which was out the window quick smart. While Luxembourg feels small, we managed to zig zag our way around for the rest of the afternoon. We get to the castle just in time, and poke about for the next hour. It's a pretty amazing place, restored bits and all. Down to the river for some quaintness, dinner and a massive de-briefing on the whereabouts of Greers new phone, which is very much not near us. We accidentally drive to Germany and carry on for a half hour and right into some amazing fog. Pictures ensue. Many, many pictures.

The last day we went to find some more castles, and pick up Greers phone from Vianden. We failed slighly on the castle finding front, only found one, and accidentally drove to Belgium haha. Ah well.

Novel complete. Luxembourg was great.
