Mash loves his surf board in the wrong way

Okokokok, so. Sleep in which is great. During Sonar we slept till 2 every day, but this day we hadn't been out till 6 am so it was better. Better better better. First things first, some swimming and beach laziness. Now, when we were in Barcelona, we were lying in the sun for hours and hours and not one bit of burn. Lagos? one beach session and I'm as red as a tomato. With one of them triangle white patches on my neck where the shadow of my chin was, and blimmin glasses whites on my face. Great. We went into town for lunch after a rather cold swim, and as we kept walking things just got redder and redder and redder. I'd catch my reflection in a window or mirror and just cringe. Ah well. Piri-piri chicken for lunch, with extra piri-piri. The oil type stuff too, not sauce like I was expecting. YUM. Then some shopping. Got me a sweet green leather bag. Yee-oh. We mosey on in to a surf shop and BOOK OURSELVES A LESSON WOOHOO.

That afternoon Portugal was playing the Czech Republic in the football, so I go drop Sam and Mash off and head out to the hills to take some photos and see a bit of country. Nice sunset. Got a bit vain on it and self timer-ed some photos hahaha. And what? Portugal ended up winning, so when I went to pick the boys up afterwards, I managed to drive into a gridlock of people tooting, leaning out windows, screaming and just generally being raucous about that fact. Cool. Then when we got home via maccas Sam find out Radiohead have cancelled their concert we were set to go to in Berlin in 2 weeks, which puts a bit of a downer on the whole situation.

SURF DAY!
Yes there is a lot of capitalisation over this topic, and that's cos I enjoyed it HEAPS. Big time. We meet up with some classic surfers - longish hair, dyed blond but grown out a bit, low riding board shorts, brown as tanned white people get, jandals and that gait, you know what I'm talking about - anyway, get handed big old foam board, a wetsuit and into the truck we go. 30 minutes later we pull up to a little bay near Vila do Bispo, take our stuff down to the beach, and then annoyingly have to sit down to wait for the tide to come in a bit. So we wander around the beach, I'm sure I spot the spot where Dumbledore takes Harry to find the Horcrux, take some photos, eat lunch, then it's time. As Mash liked to say 'suit up' hahaha. I'm not an X-man Mash. Anyway, there's 4 of us noobs amidst 20 odd half-way-theres. Us 4 get a special step by step, get in the water and splash around like kids, body surf, lying on the board type 15 minutes, then another half hour of just tryna 'catch waves' lying down, all of which I'm finding SO FUN. Maybe it's partly just being back in the sea. London, why you no coastal?

Then he gets us back on the back on the beach for the next step of our lesson, which is standing up. Obviously, the only thing we're all keen to learn to do. The other people make it look so eeeeasy damn them. Me, Sam and Mash get the go ahead, and like children we all run back thinking finally. Weeehoo. It. Is. Hard. I kept finding myself on my knees, straight on, which is less than surfer stance right. So fun anyway. The amount of times I'd get halfway there then forget how I was supposed to do it. So frustrating. I nearly wiped out about 5 people at one point. How to steer, I guess that comes with practice hahaha. I only stood up properly, like, no hands, standing the way your supposed to (as in, not feet side by side facing forwards, but that sideways warrior two yoga pose way) and I was so excited I had my hands in the air going yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy all the way to the sand. And Sam saw me so it's even better.

After that I had that grin on my face, that crazy, sore cheeks in one minute one I'm sure everyone knows about. Go me! Yeah, doin' it. It was so awesome. SO FUN! Wetsuits, what an invention, didn't get cold at all. It was like 30 degrees out tho.

On the way back, we pick up BBQ and beer, feeling all chuffed. Mini Sagres and the TASTIEST kebab sticks I've ever had, thanks for the 45 minute effort there Sam, SO tasty. I stayed in (had to drive the next day) and Sam and Mash went into town. Funny story, the first person they met in the bar was some guy named Steven, from Dunedin. Huh, what aaare the odds.
